It’s So Nice to Meet You, I’m Kathy Schneider!

It was October of 1998. Our son was turning 1 in December and our daughter was 11.
Let me back up just a few years, though… and set this story up for you.
When my husband and I first married in April of 1985, I taught school and he farmed with his dad and brother. We lived in the small town of Lamesa, in West Texas (12,000 population) and the closest larger cities were an hour away; Midland/Odessa to the South and Lubbock to the North.
Wanting to get ahead, we opened a Furniture Store, weekends only—we were thinking outside of the box and surprisingly, it worked! We earned an extra $2000 – $2500 a month but we worked 7 days a week, year-round, as I also taught Summer School.
Upon the birth of our first child in August of 1987, we didn’t want to put her in daycare…
You see, only 2 weeks after our wedding, I received a phone call that forever changed my life. My mom had been tragically killed in an auto-accident. The last time I’d seen her was at our wedding. I experienced firsthand how precious our TIME… with our loved ones really is. Mom was only 41 years old.
I vowed to never, ever take ‘time’ for granted.
I quit teaching and my husband quit farming. We moved our furniture store to a larger building ‘on the town square’ and together, the three of us went to work each day!
Life Was Good.
When our daughter, Jordan started 1st Grade, the school we wanted to enroll her in was 60 miles away. Jimmy, my husband started an Irrigation and Landscape business Lubbock, TX where we moved for our daughter’s school. We hired a manager to help run the furniture store and I commuted back and forth, a few days each week, while Jordan was at school.
A few years later, we had our son, Clayton.
Driving back and forth 60 miles each way with a new born was not an option! We closed the furniture store and I was now a stay-at-home mom with a newborn and a 10-year-old.
Now, Let’s go back to the question I asked you in the beginning!
Is it truly possible to work part-time hours and earn a full-time income around my family’s crazy, busy schedule?
The rest of my story;
It was the Fall of 1998, and our family had a crazy busy schedule. Our son was turning 1 in December and our daughter was 11. And to top it off, we had moved to the country!
Our daughter, Jordan had started riding horses and Jimmy really needed a shop and more outdoor space for the equipment, etc. for his landscape business.
We lived on the edge of town… had no neighbors and Jimmy worked crazy hours, sunrise to sunset. I think that was the ‘farmer’ in him. Ha!
I’ll be honest – as devoted (and grateful) as I was to be a stay-at-home wife and mom;
- I missed having a career.
- I missed adult friendships.
- I was bored out of my mind.
- I wanted to contribute financially to our family–and for the ‘extra’ stuff, we needed me to!
- I wanted (and needed) flexibility!
I went searching for a Direct Sales company.
It was early, early (slow dial-up) Internet days. I stumbled along the Direct Sales Associations website (by chance, as I had no clue it even existed) and researched their directory. Selecting the company I liked best, based on their products – I made a phone call to the company, and my soon to be sponsor called me!
Fast forward a couple of years. I had decent success but not knowing what to look for in a company, when I became sick, while pregnant with our 3rd child, I lost everything I’d built over the last 2 years.
In the mean-time, the Internet had come a long way.
It was January 2001. With a newborn, a preschooler and a 13-year-old, our financial needs had grown.
Still, determined not to put our children in daycare, my husband and I made the decision I’d return to the Network Marketing / Direct Sales Industry.
My understanding of the income possibility was more clear, though I still didn’t fully grasp the REAL earning potential. But this time around… instead of “hoping” I could earn a few hundred dollars a month, I set a goal to grow my income to what I would be earning as a teacher, if I were to return to the classroom when our youngest started school — and if not, I’d go back to teaching.
Long story short… it took several companies before I found the perfect match, but the friendships (and lessons) gained along the way were priceless.
In 2003, though, I found it!
I began building my Network Marketing / Direct Sales business primarily through the Internet and I was adding new team members and new customers personally but…
I was getting little to NO traction (team growth) – no DUPLICATION!
Determined to find a solution to the problem, I put together a system for our team to DUPLICATE!
Initially, this system was bits and pieces of various programs… pieced together and though we ‘attempted’ to get everyone on the same page, it was difficult. It honestly felt like our ‘system’ was held together with duct tape!
Turnkey System that Duplicates
A few months later, though… we found a ‘turnkey system’ that had everything we needed and even some features we’d not thought of! This is when we TRULY began to experience duplication!
In one year, our team’s volume grew from 150,000 to almost 600,000 and the next year we exceeded ONE MILLION!!!
Having a ‘turnkey system’ was the key to duplication, which was the key to growth!
I TRIPLED what would have been my teaching salary… in less time than it took me to get my 4-year college degree and BEFORE our youngest started school!
And the best news, I did it by working smarter and not harder. I worked consistently, but only 10 – 15 hours a week and around my family’s crazy busy schedule!
Change is Inevitable.
Through my journey in this industry (and in life), I have learned… the one thing you can count on, is change. Yes, change is inevitable and almost always leads to something better!
My (so I thought) ‘forever’ company made some changes. Changes, I could not move forward with. For me, I knew I either had to embrace change or quit and quitting was NOT an option! The (business) decision was made to change companies.
Thankfully, though… the lessons I learned along the way and my ‘turnkey system’ for duplication could move with me and this move indeed lead to something MUCH BETTER!
I’m so grateful for the lifestyle my Network Marketing / Direct Sales career has given our family… in the past, today and what we see in our future, too!
Yes, I still work My Business (about 10-15 hours a week) – but my work has ALWAYS given me flexibility.
I never had flexibility as a teacher or even as a small business owner with our Furniture Store.
For me, it’s never been about being stinkin’ filthy rich… although, I’m not complaining about the income — but it really is the ‘little’ things that I cherish and appreciate the most!
Everything I love and appreciate most about what I do is tied to one word; F.L.E.X.I.B.I.L.T.Y.
- Our three kiddos; Jordan, Clayton and Paige have never had to go to daycare because I had flexibility.
- I’ve been available to attend all their school functions; parties, performances and field trips because I had flexibility.
- Private school and / or home school – we had options! Flexibility.
- They’ve never had to ride the bus or carpool… out of necessity because I’ve had flexibility.
- Never having to ask ‘off’ when one of them is sick and needs me at home. Again, flexibility!
- Delivering their lunch… or taking them out to lunch regularly is our norm. Flexibility.
- Lunch with my husband a day or two a week is not uncommon. Flexibility.
- Exercising during the day… even if it’s walking the dog to the park and picking up the mail, flexibility!
- When the weather prevents my husband from working (which happens when we have rain, snow or even extremely low temperatures) … because I have flexibility, we’ll do something together, even if it’s just running errands.
- Vacationing when we want and where we want – would have never been possible as a teacher or a traditional business owner. FLEXIBILITY.
- We tailgate for all the college football home games for our team. These five weekends every Fall start early Friday morning and end late Sunday between Preparation, Game Day and Clean Up. Again – not possible without flexibility!
- Network Marketing is ‘work’ but it provides FLEXIBILTY!
- And the list could go on and on!
As for our future, it’s even brighter. We have a lot planned for our family!
