Hey there! Kathy here.
If Instagram is no longer one of your primary marketing platforms, you may be wondering how much attention it really deserves.
For many of us, the answer isn’t more.
A strategic Instagram profile for solopreneurs can support your business without requiring you to constantly create posts, film Reels, or keep up with another content calendar.
Because even when people discover you somewhere else… through YouTube, your blog, a collaboration, or your email list—they may still head over to Instagram to learn more about you.
And when they arrive, what does your profile tell them?
You don’t have to be active on Instagram to be intentional on Instagram. — Kathy Schneider
Your Instagram Profile Has a Job — Even If Instagram Isn’t Your Strategy
There’s an important distinction between using Instagram to grow your business and simply maintaining an Instagram presence that supports your business.
Those aren’t the same thing.
You may decide that your best marketing time is spent creating content with a longer shelf life; YouTube videos, blog posts, Pinterest content, collaborations, or your weekly newsletter.
That doesn’t necessarily mean your Instagram profile becomes irrelevant.
Think about your own behavior when you discover someone new.
✅ You watch one of their videos.
✅ Read something they wrote.
✅ Hear them speak during a collaboration.
🧐 Then curiosity kicks in.
👀 You want to know a little more about the person behind the business, so you search for them on Instagram.
Your potential customers may be doing exactly the same thing with you.
That’s why your profile can still matter even when posting on Instagram isn’t part of your regular marketing workflow.
Think of Your Profile as a Welcome Desk
Imagine walking into a business and finding no one at the front desk.
There’s information everywhere, but you’re not quite sure what’s current.
You don’t know where to go.
You aren’t sure who can help you.
Eventually, you may simply leave.
An outdated Instagram profile can create a similar experience.
Your visitor shouldn’t have to scroll through years of old posts to figure out what your business looks like today.
Instead, your profile can function like a simple welcome desk.
It should quickly help a new visitor answer three questions:
- Who are you?
- How can you help me?
- Where should I start?
You don’t need hundreds of new posts to accomplish that.
You need an intentional first impression.
Intentional Is Different From Active
This is where I think many solopreneurs can give themselves a little breathing room.
Having an Instagram presence doesn’t automatically mean committing to a publishing schedule.
You can make a conscious decision about the role Instagram plays in your business.
Maybe it’s a primary marketing platform for you.
Great.
But maybe it isn’t.
In that case, your goal doesn’t have to be keeping your feed constantly updated.
Instead, focus on the pieces that help someone understand your business when they arrive:
- A clear bio
- Consistent branding
- Three intentional pinned posts
- A few relevant recent posts
- An obvious next step
That’s a very different goal from trying to feed the Instagram algorithm every day.
Let Instagram Support Your Long-Shelf-Life Content
One of the biggest reasons I like this approach is that Instagram doesn’t have to compete with the marketing strategies you’ve already chosen.
It can support them.
If someone discovers you through a YouTube video, your Instagram profile can reinforce what they just learned about you.
If they find you through Google and read one of your blog posts, your profile gives them another opportunity to get to know you.
If they meet you through a collaboration, Instagram can help confirm that they’re in the right place.
Your profile becomes another touchpoint in the customer journey.
And it can help visitors:
- Get to know you
- Understand what you teach
- See who you serve
- Find your free resources
- Join your email list
- Discover ways to work with you
All without requiring you to create another five pieces of content this week.
Turn Your Profile Into a Business Asset
Here’s where the system matters.
If you approach Instagram as something you need to constantly recreate, it becomes another task hanging over your head.
Instead, treat your profile like any other business asset.
Plan it.
Build it.
Organize it.
Maintain it.
For example, keep your profile planning, pinned-post copy, captions, graphics, links, and other assets together in one clearly labeled location.
Then create a recurring quarterly reminder to review the profile.
During that review, ask:
- Does my bio still accurately describe what I do?
- Are my three pinned posts still relevant?
- Do all links and calls-to-action work?
- Do my most visible posts reflect my current business?
- Has anything changed that a new visitor should know?
If everything still works, you’re done.
If something needs updating, you know exactly where the files live and can make the change.
That’s much easier than remembering six months from now where you put everything.
And it’s the difference between continually recreating an Instagram presence and simply maintaining one.
Slow Down to Go Faster
This is the bigger lesson.
Sometimes slowing down to intentionally build the system feels like it’s taking more time.
But you’re making an investment.
You organize the files once.
You create the strategic posts once.
You establish the review workflow once.
Then you have a system you can return to again and again.
Slow down once to go faster everywhere else.
Your Instagram profile doesn’t have to become another ongoing demand on your time.
Give it a clear job.
Create a system for maintaining it.
Then let it quietly do its job while you focus your time and energy on the parts of your business that matter most.
This Week’s Affirmation:

Your Next Step
Take five minutes today and look at your Instagram profile through the eyes of someone discovering your business for the very first time.
Don’t start changing anything yet.
Simply ask yourself:
Who am I? How can I help them? And where should they start?
If those three answers aren’t immediately clear, you’ve found your starting point.
Slow down before you start posting more. First, make sure the profile you already have is doing its job.
