VIP Entrepreneur Spotlight: Marie Callender
Now, it's time to shine the spotlight on a remarkable solopreneur who has carved her own path to success: Marie Callender. From her humble beginnings to building a thriving business empire, Marie's journey is filled with invaluable lessons and insights that can inspire and motivate solopreneurs like you.
In the 1940s, Marie started selling the pies she made in her home kitchen to local restaurants in Orange, California. Interestingly, her son, Don, delivered her signature creations on his bicycle. Then in 1948, Marie sold the family car, giving her the means to turn her at-home bakery into a bona fide business.
She baked more than 100 pies with wholesome ingredients every day. Her story is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and unwavering dedication.
In 1964, Marie’s family opened their first pie and coffee shop. Her loyal customers savored the comforting, homemade touches in each and every serving. Her shop expanded into a chain—and into the meals and desserts found in grocery stores today.
By the 1970s, the Callender family was in charge of a veritable empire of restaurants. Don's marketing ability, along with Marie's insistence on high quality in all items sold (particularly in the pies), resulted in a huge success for the precarious enterprise that had begun decades earlier in a Quonset Hut.
In 1986, Marie Callender proudly told a reporter that she always was certain that the quality of her pies was excellent: “Everybody predicted we'd go broke, but we outlived 'em all. So we knew we had something better.”
Even when their restaurants became successful, the Callenders spent virtually no money on advertising, preferring to let word of mouth do the work of publicity for them.
Quality control was maintained on an informal basis by Marie; even in “retirement,” she continued to eat at Marie Callender restaurants every so often and report any substandard pies or other items to her son, who was the CEO of the chain.
